Getting a Tattoo Aged 28

getting your first tattoo

About a month ago, I got my first tattoo.

I’ve wanted a tattoo since I was 18 – that’s 10 whole years of research, design and chickening out. I’ve had hundreds of ideas, from the classic nautical star to the collarbone swallows pretty much everyone had in 2004. I was deeply into the pop punk scene when I was 18 and all my friends got tattoos to match their emo fringes, but I held off. I was never 100% happy with my designs – there was always a little voice that said ‘you’ll regret it in 10 years’. So I waited.

Then earlier this year, my friend Lil introduced me to Rebecca Vincent via Instagram. I spent hours pouring over her amazing work, feeling even more inspired when I saw she’d done Carrie’s gorgeous glasses tattoo. Rebecca’s style is exactly what I’d been looking for – delicate, feminine and unique. She specialises in dot work which gives such a gentle finish and after hearing high praise from a few of her previous clients, I booked an appointment. Then Lil and my husband Rob decided to join me!

The three of us went down to London together – Rob got his tattoo, Lil got hers, and I… chickened out. Again!

But, after a few more months and a little redesign, I was finally ready. Rob and I headed back to The Circle in Soho for another go. Rob is a pro at this tattoo thing now (he has three) so he helped keep me calm as I settled onto the bed and prepared for pain. And it bloody hurt! But Rebecca was amazing and so reassuring, and in 20 minutes it was all over. I didn’t cry, I didn’t need a break and when it was done I instantly wanted another. Getting tattooed is awesome! Then Rob casually got another and acted like it was licked on by kittens.

Even though it took 10 years, I’m so glad this is my first tattoo. It doesn’t really have any meaning, other than being a little nod to Rob’s stag, and it’s not influenced by any particular style or fashion. It’s just a beautiful design that’s classic enough to last a lifetime. I decided to get it on my ribcage (despite it being THE most painful place to be repeatedly stabbed with a needle) so I can show it off in scoop-arm vests but keep it to myself, too.

I’m not sure I’ll get another just yet – once the initial adrenaline had worn off, I started researching again and it may take me another 10 years to decide. So for now I’m just enjoying my first ever tattoo and the badass feeling that comes from getting inked. Tell me that never fades!

MADE x UNBOXED In My House

mid-century furniture

A little while ago, MADE contacted me to ask if I’d like to help them with the launch of their new social network, UNBOXED. I’m a huge MADE fan – half my house is furnished with their gorgeous, mid-century-inspired stuff and I think it’s well-made, reasonably priced and great quality. So, of course, I said yes.

In return for my help, I was given the Yoko Sofa Bed in Saffron Orange and told a photographer would come to my house to take some shots of all my MADE pieces, my husband, my cat and maybe me too. And a few weeks later, a very polite man turned up to do just that.

After running round with a duster like an absolute mad woman and trying to convince our cats to stay inside (only worked with Travis – Lily declined to make an appearance), we were ready for our close-ups. Our photographer took some amazing wide-angle shots of the house – something I can never get the hang of with my own camera – and generally made it look much more stylish than its usual haven’t-done-the-washing-up, bedroom-needs-a-hoover state.

Usually I’d say we don’t need another social network to take up more of our precious time, but I’m a huge fan of MADE x UNBOXED. I am obsessed with beautiful interiors but there’s a level of perfection among the Pinterest crowd that can make me feel inadequate, with my lack of wooden floors and non-vintage furniture.

MADE x UNBOXED is all about real homes – you can search for people who live around you, maybe even on the same street, and see how they’ve styled their space. I think this is SUCH a great idea – I’m that awful person peering into windows on my street, and the one time I was invited into my neighbours’ house my eyes were on stalks. Basically, I’m super nosey and this clever idea from MADE just legitimises that. COOL!

You can check out all the photos from this shoot on my UNBOXED profile. While you’re there, have a little search around the site – pop in your postcode and just scroll. So much inspiration from real people with a house/flat/apartment like you. It really is very good.

In my last post I mentioned a growing obsession with high waisted skirts paired with crop tops.

Today, the obsession continues.

I love this white version of my favourite skirt shape. It feels a bit more summery than black and when paired with a long sleeved cropped breton and a pair of Cons, it has that nonchalant Parisian vibe that I can’t get enough of right now.

I was trying to show you my tattoo here, but couldn’t quite get my arm up high enough. That’s a story for another post, anyway.

I haven’t posted an outfit photo for quite a while, and that’s mainly because I’ve been wearing the same thing day in, day out.

It’s official – I have a crop-top-and-high-waisted-skirt addiction. The struggle is real.

This is my favourite clothing combination right now. I have two versions – this monochrome one and a nautical-style white skirt that I wear with a blue breton top. The silhouette is so flattering – who knew crop tops would become essential items in my wardrobe!

I’m on the hunt for a navy high-waisted, midi-length skirt to add to my collection – if you’ve seen one anyway, link me up in the comments!

Berlin Fashion Week with Tamaris

Earlier this week I wrote about the first day of my trip to Berlin with German brand Tamaris. Day 1 was about exploring the city, while day 2 was the main event – Berlin Fashion Week.

I’ve been to my fair share of Fashion Weeks – London many times, New York a handful and Milan just once. Although it’s always fantastic to see style in different cities, Fashion Week often feels the same wherever you are, especially when you’re working. It’s stressful, it’s judgemental and it’s very, very tiring.

Berlin, however, felt very different. Usually Berlin’s Fashion Week is held near the Brandenburg Gate but due to the World Cup, this season’s event was at Erika-Hess-Eisstadion – an amazing, almost greenhouse-like space that was filled with flowers and sunshine. Immediately it felt more relaxed, more friendly and much more accepting than any other Fashion Week I’ve been to. There were no posers and very few ‘street style’ photographers which meant the pressure to dress perfectly was off. Although there were stylish people everywhere, the fashion was more accessible and less ‘early 90s Courtney Love’ (as is often the case in London).

There was also LOADS more to do at Berlin Fashion Week. The main space was full of branded stalls offering free manicures, champagne, photobooths, leather notebooks and much more. As a guest of Tamaris, we headed straight to the Tamaris stall where a huge electronic graffiti wall was set up for visitors to design their own shoes. Very cool!

With nails freshly painted and a glass of bubbles in hand, we settled ourselves in the bloggers’ lounge where there was even more champagne (and iced coffees, Diet Coke and sparkling water – so fashion) and delicious food to enjoy while we waited for our first show.

After a couple of shows, we were treated to a backstage tour and a sneak peek of the big show for the day – Marc Cain.

The Marc Cain show was an absolute highlight of the day. The circus theme was perfectly expressed through sparkly curtains, elephants honking, tigers roaring and a breathtaking performance by acrobats to kick things off.

And the clothes were just as special as the staging, with slouchy suits, big, bold floral prints and sharp tailoring. Right up my street and straight onto my wishlist.

The whole day was a welcome departure from the usual Fashion Week nonsense and thoroughly enjoyable. It was interesting to learn about the Tamaris brand, too – it’s not a well-known name over here but I think that’s about to change. One in two German women wear Tamaris shoes and it’s one of the biggest brands in the country, so I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on them!
