Blogger Buys – A Haul

things bloggers buy

Fact: bloggers are terrible enablers. Over the years, I’ve purchased all sorts of things from blogger recommendations and I trust the opinions of my favourite bloggers implicitly. Basically, I’m a huge sucker for ‘blogger trends’ and will buy into pretty much anything that’s photographed with a 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Yesterday I had some time to kill in London and found myself wandering into Muji (dangerous) and then Liberty (a bank balance death sentence). I’m currently on a ‘no-clothes-shoes-accessories’ shopping ban for Lent, so I went a bit mad due to withdrawal and splurged on a whole host of Blogger Buys, as seen on my favourite online platforms. So here’s my very first haul – as inspired by my bloglovin’ reader.

aesop natural cleanser oily skin

Aesop Amazing Face Cleanser, £21

Since using up my NUDE Facial Oil a few weeks ago, I’ve been looking for a new cleanser to use with my Clarisonic. I have oily skin so the blogger’s favourite Parsley Seed Facial Cleansing Oil wasn’t right for me, but I came away with the Amazing Face Cleanser which includes a gorgeous blend of citrus to remove excess oil.

Mason Pearson Pure Bristle Handy Brush, £42

When I started having bonded hair extensions fitted last year, I became quite militant about caring for my hair. I’m also still obsessed with the long, thick lengths so brush it all.the.time, which isn’t always good for it. I was noticing some breakage, so invested in a Mason Pearson brush to keep in my handbag. Bonded extensions need careful brushing to avoid damaging the bonds, so this pure boar bristle style from the classic brand is perfect.

Diptyque Insolite Candle (Limited Edition), £45

I have to try very, very hard to control my candle obsession. £45 is a gross amount of money to spend on a candle, but nothing – nothing – beats Diptyque when it comes to gorgeous design and long-lasting scent. This is the new limited edition candle in collaboration with Liberty – a zesty, citrus scent with a floral heart that’s just perfect for bright spring mornings.

FYI, if you’re a fellow Diptyque fan and still wince at the price, I’d really recommend the miniature versions. At £20 a pop they’re still expensive but the scent is just as strong AND you get the jar afterwards… which if we’re honest, is one of the main selling points.

muji jewellery storage ideas

Muji Acrylic Storage, from £2.50

The Muji acrylic storage systems are so popular with bloggers, their quotes are featured in displays at Muji stores. When picking up mine, I spotted Lily and Kate giving their seal of approval – very cool. I have a few Muji bits for storing makeup and stuff on my desk, but after a huge jewellery sort-out at the weekend I knew I needed to add to my collection. This 12-section tray is perfect for earrings and rings and means I can see my favourites at a glance.

And here endeth my very first haul! Have you ever bought anything after seeing it on a blog? Which are your favourite blogs for product recommendations?

My eBay Collections

Posted in Fashion, Home, Second Hand Shopping.

I’m a long-time fan of eBay and have used the auction site for many years. Back in my thrifting days, I scored some of my best vintage bargains through eBay – faux fur coats, floral tea dresses, leather brogues… aaaah, those were the days!

Now I’m more inclined to browse for homewares – eBay is jam-packed with gorgeous furniture, vintage suitcases, enamel cookware and a whole host of delightful bits and bobs for the home. I could (and do) spend hours browsing for pretty new things, so when eBay them-actual-selves got in touch and asked me to help launch their eBay Collections, I was delighted.

eBay Collections is a new service that allows you to collect your favourite eBay finds together. It’s kind of a more visual ‘watch list’ – you can create groups focused on particular themes, styles, wishes… whatever you want.

To help launch eBay Collections I created 12 collections of my own, based on my searches over the last few months. I’ve just moved into a new house so the home features heavily, but I indulged my 23 year-old self with a Vintage Fashion Collection… and was surprised to find so many amazing pieces!

how to shop on ebay

My favourite Collection is ‘My Mid-Century Home’ – there is so much gorgeous mid-century furniture on eBay, it really is the best place to find a G-Plan side table or Ercol dining chairs. I’ve already earmarked a new dressing table for the bedroom and have my eye on a stunning 1960s mirror. You can see them and everything else I’m currently coveting in my Collections here. Want more inspiration? Explore all the eBay Collections and create your own here. Happy shopping!

What’s your favourite eBay find?

How Do You Like Your Eggs In The Morning?

Posted in Food.

… is a question I’ll be asking my mum this Mother’s Day! In a combined effort with my siblings and siblings-in-law, this Mother’s Day I’m treating my mum, grandma and mum-in-law to a morning of pampering followed by a home-cooked brunch and a glass or two of champagne.

To give the occasion a bit of flair, Cath Kidston sent me a gift card so I could explore their Mother’s Day gift selection. I picked up a few things to make brunch go with a bang, including this beautiful Safari Melamine Tray. The eiderdown is also a Cath creation.

I thought I’d better get practising my egg-poaching skills in preparation (my mum is a kick-ass cook) so I whipped up a couple and served them on toast with some sliced avocado and a pinch of sea salt. I like my eggs a bit firmer so leave them to cook a little longer, but let’s face it – eggs are good in any form.

I still have some funds left on the gift card so I’ll be back to purchase another couple of things before the big day – my grandma has a Miniature Schnauzer called Harry who looks a lot like Stanley, so maybe this Travel Pouch would be a good shout?

Are you celebrating Mother’s Day?

Discovering Hamburg #2

hamburg clouds bar restaurant

In yesterday’s post I took you through half of my trip to Hamburg – now I’ll show you the rest!

After exploring Hamburg’s independent design scene during the day, we met up again at 6pm for the evening’s activities. First stop was Clouds – a 24-storey building in the fashionable Reeperbahn area of the city. We headed up to the 23rd floor for cocktails and a glorious view of the sun setting over the city. The very top floor is a terrace still under construction, but it’s due to open in April and it will be stunning.

Then it was on to dinner at Hotel East. Despite being inside a hotel, the restaurant is one of the most popular in Hamburg and was packed full, even at 7pm on a Thursday. The surroundings are plush and decadent and there’s a live sushi kitchen in the centre so you can watch chefs prepare your food – very cool and tasty too!

After dinner we headed out to St. Pauli on the Hamburg Beatles Tour. I must admit I was a bit thrown by this – apparently Hamburg was a key location for the Beatles during their early years and they played many gigs here. Brilliant for Beatles fans but it wasn’t really my scene… luckily we ducked into one of the many full-to-bursting bars in St. Pauli for G&Ts and some dancing afterwards. Much better!

hamburg culture visits

Our last day was reserved for exploring the HafenCity area, starting with the historic Speicherstadt building. Speicherstadt is a collection of warehouses designed to transfer goods in and out of Hamburg’s harbour. The harbour doesn’t see much action these days, so since 2009 Speicherstadt has been under development and exciting things are starting to happen inside these towering buildings.

We visited one of the businesses that now call Speicherstadt home, fashion label Brax. It was great to see how the space has been repurposed for a more modern use while still retaining its original character – all exposed wood, concrete flooring and an amazing view over the city.

With a couple of hours left before lunch, we were guided around the HafenCity area. Right on the water, this part of Hamburg is up-and-coming with loads of development including luxury apartments, a university and a concert hall.

We visited the 25hours Hotel and had a little sneak peek around – I absolutely loved the design of this place, all bright colours, copper piping and bicycles as art. We also ducked into JAN KATH – an amazing German designer who creates bespoke rugs from deconstructed Persian styles. The shop was beautiful and full of inspiration… shame the rugs cost upwards of €7,000!

After a final walk along the waterfront, we sheltered from the wind in Carls – a gorgeous French restaurant that overlooks the bay. Carls’ parent restaurant Jacob’s has two Michelin stars so I was very excited to eat, and the fresh, delicious food did not disappoint. A wonderful way to end our trip!

I had a fantastic few days in Hamburg – if you’re bored of Berlin and want a city break with something different, I’d definitely recommend a trip. Fascinating culture, stunning design and delicious food – everything you need for a weekend away!

visiting hamburg ideas

A couple of weeks ago I was invited on a press trip to Hamburg. My initial thought was ‘Hamburg? Where’s that?’ – my geography isn’t great and Germany is somewhere I’ve never given much thought to. But Germany it was, and within 24 hours I was on a flight (which took an hour and a half – quicker than a train from Leeds to London!) heading towards the city. Here’s what I got up to…

where to stay in hamburg

I joined the group – which included fashion, design and art writers from across Europe – a little later on the first day due to my last minute flight, and caught up with them at Hamburger Kunsthalle museum for a double exhibition – Feuerbach’s Muses – Lagerfeld’s Models. The museum has curated a collection of Karl Lagerfeld’s photography alongside paintings by Anselm Feuerbach – an exploration of models, muses and the way beauty is portrayed.

After a guided tour of the exhibition, we headed down the street to The Cube, the museum’s restaurant, where we enjoyed a delicious 5-course dinner. Art can often be lost on me but it was fascinating to see how Lagerfeld’s modern photography echoed paintings from the late-19th century.

Day two dawned bright and sunny and we had chance to explore the hotel we stayed in – Barcelo Hotel Hamburg, a central spot that made it easy to get around the city. Rooms are spacious and modern, with an amazing walk-in shower and a glorious view, and the breakfast was amazing too!

Our first stop on day two was the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg for The Chanel Legend – an exhibition dedicated to Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel and her work. I absolutely loved seeing Chanel through the ages – from the delicate flapper dresses of the 30s to the classic LBD and her signature tweed suits. There was even a screen showing the episode of The Simpsons where Marge finds her own Chanel suit!

where to eat in hamburg

From the museum we caught the subway to Schanzenviertel for lunch at Bullerei Deli. It’s one of the most popular spots in Hamburg and it’s not hard to see why – we grabbed a table in the sun and enjoyed burgers bursting with flavour and chilled glasses of Fritz-Kola. Inside was just a gorgeous, with blooming floral displays and mismatched vintage furniture.

After lunch we headed further into Schanzenviertel to discover Hamburg’s independent fashion scene. This was probably my favourite part of the trip – Hamburg has a vibrant design culture and inspiration can be found everywhere.

Walking through the Karolinenviertel area and down Marktstraße (‘Market Street’) was such a great experience – we ducked in and out of tiny shops jam-packed with trinkets and treasures, from letterpress gorgeousness to delicate jewels and handmade headwear. Our tour guide was local designer Katharina Czemper who owns a label and shop on the street, Maison Suneve and it was brilliant to have her knowledge and insight.

After a long and happy day exploring, we retired to the hotel to rejuvenate before the night’s adventures and our final day in Hamburg. Come back tomorrow for the second instalment!
