Styling Hair Extensions and Long Hair

Posted in Beauty.

Last week I wrote about caring for hair extensions, and this week it’s all about styling.

It took me quite a while to get used to styling my extensions. I was so used to my short, fine, poker-straight hair that suddenly having long, naturally curly hair was a real shock and I had no idea what to do with it. The first few days were lost to frizz, tatty ends and clouds of hairspray as I battled with an entirely new hair type.

Five months down the line and I’ve got my routine down to a fine art. Here are my tips for styling hair extensions…

how to style hair extensions

My extensions are naturally curly with a tendency to frizz, so taming my locks is a really important part of my styling routine. After washing and conditioning, I run a few pumps of Luxe Oil through the lengths and ends, followed by a teeny bit of Frizz Ease. This combination not only leaves my hair smooth and sleek, but protects it from heat damage and nourishes it throughout the day. Luxe Oil is lovely and light for finer hair – I absolutely adore this product.

Having hair extensions often means there are two different hair types on one head – my natural hair is still fine and poker straight, and I have to treat it a bit differently to the extensions further down. A spritz of Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep on my roots gives that fine hair the bounce it needs, and I blow dry the top section of my hair upside down to give it extra oomph.

I find a good blowdry is the best way to keep my hair smooth and under control. I work on small sections at a time, clipping the rest of my hair on top of my head and drying each section with a round brush to pull it straight. I use the Boar Bristle Brush from Cloud Nine (c/o) as the soft bristles glide over my bonds without snagging or pulling.

When my hair is dry and straight, I use one of two tools – either my Cloud Nine Original Irons or my Cloud Nine Waving Wand (c/o). Both these tools are absolutely fantastic – the variable heat settings mean I can lower the temperature to protect my extensions, and the results are amazing. The Irons smooth the ends of my hair so it looks sleek and shiny, while the Wand creates loose, vintage-style waves that last for days.

The final step in my styling routine is a few sprays of Batiste. Recently I’ve been wooed by the Oribe Dry Texturising Spray but I always come back to Batiste – it’s great for boosting my fine roots, especially now they’re easily weighed down by the length of my extensions.

And that’s that! In this photo my styling is a day old but still holding up nicely.

Autumn Essentials – The Cardigan

The best thing about autumn/winter, in my humble opinion, is knitwear.

I LOVE knitwear.

Cardigans, jumpers, knitted dresses, cable knit socks and chunky beanies – I have absolutely loads of the stuff and I still buy more. There’s nothing quite like bundling up in a cosy cardi and heading off for a blustery walk (even if it is just round the shops).

The folks at Boden asked me to pick an essential item from their Autumn/Winter collection, so of course I jumped straight into the knitwear section. The Relaxed Cashmere Cardigan is gorgeous to wear and feels totally snuggly… which is really all I ask from my winter knits. Since chatting to Kristabel about the negatives of polyester/acrylic knitwear many years ago, I avoid them wherever I can. This cardigan is 100% cashmere and feels just dreamy. I love the navy shade, too – it looks great with red.

I teamed the cardigan with statement earrings, a simple striped tee and my trusty skinny jeans. Dressed up with some colour-pop heels and a lovely leather bag, this is a great smart/casual outfit for chilly days.

Back in Black Leather

Usually I can be counted on to whip out my winter wardrobe from September 1st. But this year I clung on to summer, willing good weather to stick around for my wedding day on the 21st. Thursday it rained. Friday was freezing. Saturday was just perfect – warm and sunny with a light breeze and a glorious sunset. No need for that Kate Middleton-esque angora shrug I spent a whole day searching for, then.

After the wedding we plunged straight into 30-degree days in Santorini and by the time my feet finally touched home ground, I hadn’t seen a jacket or pair of tights for what seemed like forever. And I missed them dearly.

As a winter baby and huge fan of autumn, you can imagine my delight, then, when a cold snap arrived this week. Yeah, yeah – I know we all love the sunshine. But it’s a special day when you can finally retrieve your favourite heavy leather biker from the back of the wardrobe and wear it with bundled-up pride. Hooray!

I bought this jacket for £100 in TK Maxx a few years ago – at the time it felt like SUCH a lot of money for a jacket but it remains one of my favourite purchases and I’m always happy when the weather turns so I can wear it again.

Looking After Hair Extensions and Long Hair

Posted in Beauty.

If you’ve been reading this blog for a little while, you’ll know that for many years I had very short hair. It was cropped, then bobbed, then cropped again before I finally decided I wanted it long. And I’m far too impatient to wait for something as slow as natural hair growth.

So in June this year, I took the plunge and went for Great Lengths bonded hair extensions (the cost of which was covered by Great Lengths and my salon, Russell Eaton). I wore my first set of extensions until early September – they could’ve lasted another couple of months, but with an upcoming wedding I wanted my hair looking its best and so had my extensions removed and replaced about a month ago.

Now I’m on my second set, I feel much more qualified to offer advice to anyone considering extensions. They are very pricy (I paid around £600 this time around – ouch) so it’s important to really look after them and give them the TLC they need to last longer. Here are my tips for caring for your extensions – whether they’re bonded or clip-ins.

A common complaint with hair extensions and long hair in general is dryness – the ends can get very straw-like which causes breakage and nasty split ends. When it comes to caring for my extensions, combatting dry ends is what I focus on.

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer – this is my Holy Grail haircare product. I know it’s been featured by a billion beauty bloggers already, but it really does work. It’s a pre-shampoo treatment that you apply to wet hair – I use it every time I wash my hair (3 times a week) and pop a shower cap over the top, washing out after about 5 minutes.
Kerastase products – Kerastase products are a joy to use. I’ve tried quite a few things from them and every one has worked wonderfully. At the moment I’m using the Resistance range shampoo in the shower, and the Initialiste Scalp and Hair treatment as a leave-in conditioner a couple of times a week. As I have quite fine hair I avoid the scalp with this one and just apply to the mid-lengths and ends.
Moroccan Oil Hydrating Conditioner – I tend to chop and change my conditioners as my hair gets used to them very quickly and they soon become ineffective. This Moroccan Oil one has been great, but I’ve just moved on to Aussie’s 3 Minute Miracle and that’s also doing a fab job.
NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Usage Dry Oil – hair oils are old news now, but this is one of the best. It’s quite heavy for fine hair so I keep it for night time and only use on the ends of my hair, but it really does make it super soft and silky.

Hair extensions are prone to matting and tangling, so it’s really important to use the right tools to keep your hair knot-free. Because the bonds of extensions create lots of little ‘snags’ in your hair, you can’t just use any old brush – hard plastic bristles are a MASSIVE no (and a seriously painful lesson learnt). I have two brushes for clearing tangles – a black soft plastic bristle brush for wet hair and this natural fibre brush for dry hair. They’re both official Great Lengths brushes, so glide over bonds and sort out knots without pulling.

Vintage Glamour and a Santorini Sunset

Posted in Blogging, Daily Outfits, Weddings.

santorini sunset honeymoon

Rob and I went to Santorini for our honeymoon. It was a truly beautiful, breathtaking, gorgeously awesome place that deserves a whole post of its own – coming soon as part of my special ‘Wedding Week’ feature. For now, I’ll give you a sneak peek of this wonderful island and its spectacular sunsets by sharing one of my favourite outfits I wore while we were out there.

To celebrate our one week anniversary (gotta remember the milestones in married life), I got a little dressed up in the floor-sweeping Evita Maxi Dress, sent to me by the lovely ladies at Gorgeous Couture. I’m not usually one for glamour – I prefer my outfits with a casual edge – but this dress is beautifully fancy without being too OTT. The fabric is heavy and it feels glorious to wear. It hangs perfectly and the lace detailing on the bodice give it that vintage feel. I paired it with huge sunnies and a cocktail ring for that Hollywood Movie Star factor… probably ruined by me tripping over the hem on the way up the mountain for dinner, but whatever.

We shot these photos from our terrace just as the sun was setting. Santorini sunsets are famous and people come from all over the world to see them. We were lucky enough to have our own private spot with a perfect view (and hot tub… sorry not sorry), but people lined the streets around us every night to see for themselves.
