Are You too Old to Blog?

Posted in Blogging.

Last week I read a really interesting piece by Big Fashionista about the age of bloggers. The post discussed the idea that bloggers fall into a certain age category, and anyone outside that neat little box is considered ‘too old’ to blog. It really got me thinking, and I considered writing my own thoughts on the topic here on Little Bird.

And then, later in the week, I got an anonymous comment that suggested I was ‘too old’ (and fat, but that’s by the by) to wear Disco Pants. Comments about weight or appearance don’t bother me much, but being told you are too old can really hit a nerve, especially if you’re a teensy bit sensitive about your age to begin with. So let’s discuss – are we too old to blog?

The simple answer, of course, is no – no one is ‘too old’ to do anything as long as they’re physically able. But the notion of being too old for something is a cultural one – we’re ‘too old’ to wear our favourite My Little Pony t-shirt at 12 (and it still cuts like a knife), ‘too old’ to read Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging at 18 (but Proust is so dull). And two of the most viciously ageist industries are fashion and the media.

The young and the beautiful will often succeed in a visually-led industry. Fashion blogging relies heavily on imagery – sure, the words are important, but a pretty young face will always catch the eye. Many of today’s biggest bloggers are more like models, gaining lucrative contracts with fashion houses because of their looks. And the look fashion has always favoured is one that’s fresh and youthful, no matter how hard brands like Dove work to change that.

I am 26. Not old by any stretch of the imagination. But at fashion blogger events, I am often one of the oldest in the room. With its focus on unique, individual looks and fast fashion, blogging has attracted a crowd of young, stylish people, often still in education. A difference of 5 years in the fash blog pack can feel more like 20.

Ageism is a prevalent problem in industries across the world. As digital technology moves forward at a lightning place, older skills are squeezed out in favour of a faster, online solution. Our newspapers and magazines are filled with young, unlined faces and size 6 figures and even though male actors and presenters can seemingly work until they fall into the grave, there’s a distinct lack of older females on our TV and cinema screens. This is where blogging should be different – we are an alternative to the mainstream. There’s no size requirement or maximum age when signing up to Blogger. The internet is a big place and there’s room for us all – from the young and restless like Tavi to the gracefully aged Advanced Style.

Have you ever felt too old to blog? What are your thoughts on blogging and age – is it really just a number?

What to Wear to a Festival

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion, Travel.

There was a time in life when I could describe myself as a regular festival-goer. I went to my first in 2002 (Leeds Festival with Metallica, System of a Down, Blink 182, Linkin Park, Blur and The Streets. Oh my!) and for the next few years, my friends and I would get together every summer to watch live music, come rain or shine.

But then I hit an age when sleeping on the cold, hard, often wet ground, surrounded by empty bottles of cider with no access to a decent bathroom, was no longer a fun way to spend the weekend. I admit it – most of the time, I’d rather watch it on TV and go for a wee without fear of catching Hepatitis. I know, I’m pathetic.

It’s been a few years since my last festival and even though the desire to roll around in mud and eat potentially life-threatening burgers still evades me, I’m itching to get back in that atmosphere. Plus, dressing for a festival is possibly the most fun you’ll have with your wardrobe.

See? So fun! I think it’s the wellies. Wellies make everything better. Mine were sent to me by the lovely people at Hunter – they’re the Original Gloss style in ‘citrus’ and the most fun wellies I’ve ever owned. And I have about five pairs of wellies, so that’s saying something (I live in the north. We need wellies).

Dressing for a festival can be tricky, but the key is a mix of the practical and the pretty. I found this vintage dress in a charity shop in Brighton – it was a rather long, matronly style so I chopped the bottom off for a more modern look. I love the bright florals and the loose cotton fabric is comfortable and easy to wear. Plus, if it gets wet it’ll dry quickly! Over the top I’m wearing a waterproof jacket from J.Crew – an essential for British festivals and much nicer than those transparent plastic ponchos.

A cross-body bag, like this vintage leather one, will keep your essentials close and safe, while a straw trilby keeps the rain off your head and hides a multitude of hair sins. And the most important aspect of your festival style – wellies. No plimsols. Converse won’t cut it. And don’t even attempt sandals of any kind. It’s wellies or bust, unless you want to come home with trench foot.

I don’t have any festival tickets this year, so this outfit may not see the light of day. Unless you vote for me hereI’ve been chosen as a finalist in Oxfam’s competition to win tickets to the Isle of Wight festival! If you like the cut of my jib and think I deserve a few nights in a tent, just leave a comment with my name (JenLittleBird or Jen Holmes or just Jen) to vote. Voting closes 9am tomorrow – thank you kindly!

My Holiday Wardrobe – Morocco

Posted in Fashion, Travel.

A few weeks ago I was asked to take part in the Cox & Kings Holiday Wardrobe Pinterest Challenge. My task? To create a Pinterest board featuring my 10 fashion essentials for a holiday in a far-flung destination. With a renewed love of Pinterest and a serious case of wanderlust, it sounded like the perfect distraction from work. And as the kind of person who makes extensive lists of what to pack before going away, creating a digital suitcase for an imaginary holiday is kinda my idea of fun. Bring it on!

Cox & Kings offer tailor made holidays to a variety of exotic destinations, but the one that really appealed to me was Morocco. I’ve always wanted to go – there’s something magical about all those colours; the piles of spices and crumbling buildings. And after reading Rosie’s post about her Moroccan adventure, I was happy to lose myself in images of markets, fabrics and archways for a while.

Sorry for the slightly rubbish Photoshop effort.

Here are a few pins from my board as it currently stands – I decided to pin some inspiration before choosing my 10 holiday wardrobe items. One of the reasons I chose Morocco was the wealth of colour the country has – bright pinks, rich reds, cool blues and tangy oranges are key shades. I also love the sweeping archways and keyhole shapes cut into cool white stone. All these things have been recreated in fashion time and time again and middle eastern style is often a key trend for the summer months. I can’t wait to get started on my packing pins!

Have you ever been to Morocco? Any style advice for my virtual wardrobe? I’m hoping to visit soon – one of many luxury holidays (I wish)!

Hey! This post is part of a competition entry. I haven’t been paid to post it, but I might get a holiday out of it. Plus, some of the links are tracked. Just FYI!

Rose Gold

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

I’ve developed a slight obsession with rose gold. It’s such a flattering shade – softer than yellow gold, warmer than silver and totally on trend, darling.

The grey, dreary scene outside my bedroom window had me searching my wardrobe for soft, pretty colours. These dusky pink jeans were crumpled up in the back of a drawer – hence the creases – but I think they’re a pretty good match for my much-adored rose gold studded Zara bag. Apparently I can’t even walk past a branch of Zara without ‘popping in’ and emerging 30 minutes later with a bag full of goodies – this silk and jersey tee is another recent purchase. I just can’t resist a studded shoulder!

I finished my outfit with some nude Topshop ballerina flats, which I’m not sure are meant for outdoor use. After walking round in them and feeling every stone, crack and blade of grass, I’m wondering if they’re actual ballet pumps…

When The Weather Lets You Down (Again)…

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

Keep calm and carry on wearing sandals. That’s my (not-very-catchy) motto, anyway.

I’ve been wanting to wear these black lace-up sandals c/o Sarenza for AGES, but the rain just wouldn’t stop and they’re clearly not suitable for navigating the muddy Yorkshire countryside. So I waited. And waited. And waited. After what seems like 20 billion years of rain and grey skies, I finally caved and just bloody well put them on. In your face, Mother Nature!

Okay, so my feet were cold. And a bit wet. But at least these sandals are more substantial than most, and I love how they look with my ever-present Disco Pants.

The scarf is a recent Zara purchase – lightweight scarves are a staple in my summer wardrobe and Zara has the best range. A light cotton or soft silk adds just the right amount of coverage to keep off the chill, and a bright colour or cool pattern will add detail to a simple outfit. Teamed with a chiffon blouse and classic black blazer, I felt fine flitting from the police station (handing in my driving licence after a speeding offence – argh!) to the studio then out for dinner and drinks in the evening.

Oh, the bag? I know. It’s a beauty. It was a very expensive impulse purchase from Zara (where else? J’adore that shop) and I love it like a child. Maybe a little bit more. Don’t judge!

Have you had a chance to wear your favourite summer pieces? Are you soldiering on in flip flops and maxi dresses or are you back in boots and a coat?
