ghd Giveaway – The Winner

Posted in Blogging.

A few weeks ago I hosted a ghd giveaway where I asked you to tell me your hair raising tales for the chance to win the Deluxe Scarlet Collection Set. Your stories had me laughing for days – seriously folks, don’t attempt to highlight your own hair and always remember that a fringe can’t be cut off.

Picking my favourite was a hard task as all the entries were so heart (and hair) wrenching, and there were many deserving winners who I felt really needed the prize to soothe their souls. Clearly the memories of a bad hair day are everlasting. But there could only be one, and that’s…

“I remember the day my mam blow dried my fringe. Year 6, end of the year, with a fringe you could fit your foot through most likely. Believe it or not there was no hair spray involved, just a small dollop of mousse, and Christ did that mousse go a long way! I look back and think ‘why did I do this ‘coke can fringe?’ but at the time, I was the ‘fittest’ girl in the class; all the girls touched it and all the boys wanted to get off with me. Best day of my life.”
I love Jennifer’s story. We’ve all been there, haven’t we? The Coke Can Fringe (TM) was the look du jour in the mid-late 90s and those who could master the perfect loop were universally revered. If Jennifer went to my school I would want her to be my BFF – she’s weathered the storm of a truly terrible hair do and can now see the funny side, which is why she’s my winner. Well done Jennifer!
Thanks to everyone who shared their hair raising tales – I now consider you all my spirit sisters. Let us go forth with our glossy manes, hair history behind us.
Until the next ‘experiment’!

How To Wear An Oversized Chunky Knit Jumper

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

Usually, ‘chunky’ is a word I don’t want to associate with my upper body. Chunky is not flattering. Chunky is not chic. So why, then, am I so enamoured with the chunky knit jumper? Maybe it’s the weather, or my tendency to go into hibernation for the first two months of the year. Whatever it is, I find myself casting aside my form-fitting dresses and cute cardigans in favour of an abundance of wool.

As the name suggests, chunky knit jumpers are tricky to wear because they can make you look a little… well, chunky. All that extra bulk can pad out your shoulders, giving you a distinct Dwayne Jonhson vibe. And no one wants that. Fortunately, after weeks of trial and error and more than my fair share of fashion faux pas, I’ve devised a strategy for successfully styling the chunky knit…

  • Balance out an oversized top with skinny jeans – roll them up to just above the ankles for extra leg-lengthening loveliness
  • Layer underneath with a long sleeve tee rather than wearing a coat, which will add more bulk
  • Wear delicate flats or heels, not big boots or trainers
  • Add detail to a plain jumper with a statement necklace
  • Keep a sense of proportion by pairing your oversized jumper with a small bag
Are you a fan of the oversized chunky knit? How do you wear yours?

Thrift Finds of The Month – February

Posted in Second Hand Shopping.

It may only be the 5th of February, but it’s already shaping up to be an excellent month for thrifting. Before snow engulfed the country and I went into hibernation with udon noodles and a bottle of Rioja, I nipped out for a quick look round my favourite charity shops. Here are some of the things I came back with…

Carved dressing table mirror, £14.99

Even second hand shoppers are not immune to the impulse buy. This beauty was sitting next to the counter as I paid for my other goodies and even thought it was a bit overpriced, I couldn’t resist. It’s over the top, ridiculously girly and highly impractical with a kitten who likes to knock things over, but I love it.

Vintage pleated skirt, £3.99

My limited photography skills can’t capture the true colour of this pretty pleated skirt – it’s more of a bright plum purple. I plan to wear it at waist level with a leather belt, a neon tee and killer heels.

Betty Boop holdall, £4.99

I’m in LOVE with this amazing vintage holdall – anything featuring Betty Boop is a winner in my book. The outside is fabulously kitsch while inside is roomy enough for all those weekend away essentials. I’ve bookmarked this as my carry-on when we fly to Chicago later this year.

So that’s what I found – have you been second hand shopping this weekend? Pick up any brilliant bargains?

Fashion Blog Photography – In Or Out?

Posted in Blogging.

I started blogging in 2009 as a way to share my more fashionable thoughts with a wider audience. The words have always come easily to me, but capturing images for a highly visual medium like a blog has proven more difficult. My earlier posts feature dark, dingy photos and although they’ve improved dramatically since then, I’m still no match for Carrie. Any photography skill I possess is instantly lost when there’s no natural light.

I’ve always operated under the assumption that outdoor photography on blogs is better than indoor. It’s definitely easier – there’s so much light, brick walls make great backgrounds and I don’t have to move two tables and an armchair to get a good spot. So I was surprised by the commenter on this post who said they much preferred my indoor shots.

The commenter mentioned that they liked the lifestyle/home decor element of indoor blog photography, which is an angle I’ve never considered. By far, my favourite posts on fashion blogs are those that give the reader an insight into the blogger’s life – I am terribly nosy and love seeing other people’s bedrooms/kitchens/closets. So do photographs that combine outfits with a more personal touch work better than generic outdoor scenes?

One thing’s for sure – it is much, MUCH less embarrassing to take photos indoors. I don’t have anyone to take my photos so it’s just me and the tripod trotting down the street and setting up among postmen, passersby and and once, a curious policeman. And maybe if I could master the ISO setting on my camera, my indoor shots could be light and airy. It’s definitely something I’ll be thinking about, and I’m really glad the commenter provided an alternative point of view to consider.

What about you – do you take indoor or outdoor shots? Which do you prefer, and why? Do you enjoy taking photos for your blog or do you, like me, find it a bit of a struggle? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

90s Style – It’s Totally Rufus!

I loved the 90s. The 90s was my TIME. My most important teenage years took place between 1997 and 1999 – I experimented with hair mascara (and boys), wore a Slipknot hoody, swapped Bliss for Elle Girl and watched many, many rom coms. Back then, fashion blogging was still a twinkle in Susie Bubble‘s eye and magazine editorials were far too serious, so all my style inspiration came from music and movies.

I went through phases – in 1997 I was obsessed with The Spice Girls and wore stacked Buffalo platform trainers with embellished jeans and slogan tees. After watching Clueless for the first time I took up pleated skirts and knee high socks. Then came my The Craft inspired goth phase, complete with heavy eyeliner and swathes of black lace. The 90s was the decade of the fad and my friends and I always participated – from Cleopatra’s goggles to All Saints and their baggy cargo pants.

I think today’s outfit has a distinct 90s vibe. Maybe it’s the preppy shirt-and-jumper (so Cruel Intentions) or the pointy court shoes (very Posh Spice). All I know is I’ve spent all day looking up my favourite 90s film quotes and reciting Shaznay’s rap from Never Ever. Can we have the 90s back, please?

Do you remember the 90s? Which trends sum up the decade for you? And can you name the film that’s inspired today’s post title? 10 points to the first correct answer!
