Old Faithful

If you’ve been reading A Little Bird Told Me for some time, you’ll know I used to be very into second hand shopping. I’d be at car boot sales every Sunday and spend my lunch break in charity shops, rooting around in less-than-desirable conditions for vintage tea dresses or faux fur stoles.

I think it’s quite telling that one of the only pieces from those days that still remains in my wardrobe is a dress originally from Zara. My love for that place knows no bounds, obviously.

Regardless of its origins, I call this dress my Old Faithful. It’s the simplest shape, with a classic monochrome print, a Peter Pan collar and cute pockets. I wear it constantly because it’s just so easy and always looks great with black accessories and a red (or orange, in this case) lip.

Today I teamed it with a few other Old Faithfuls – my Mulberry bag, bought in 2012 for my first New York Fashion Week, my Kurt Geiger strappy sandals, bought last year for my hen do, and my Orla Kiely sunglasses, bought last year and worn almost every day since.

Sometimes, the oldies are the goodies, you know?

How To: Wear Birkenstocks

what to wear with birkenstock sandals

I’ve already written about my love for Birkenstocks, current fashion faves and friend to the awkward of foot. After that post a few people asked me what else I wore my Birkes with, so I thought I’d do a quick guide on how to wear them without looking like you’re off to join a commune and make candles from hemp.

I think the key to successful Birke-styling is keeping it simple. Go for the classics – washed denim, breton stripes and a boxy bag balance the chunky sandals and add a sleeker edge.

Finish things off with a top knot, sunglasses and a slick of red lipstick and no one will ever presume you believe in dreamcatchers and burn incense 24 hours a day. Result!

Have you entered Birkenstock territory yet?

Exploring Yorkshire: Hebden Bridge

Rob and I were at a bit of a loose end this weekend, but rather than doing something we always do (wandering around York, sitting in our local coffee shop, watching films and going to Ikea are among our favourite activities) we decided to discover somewhere new.

Despite only being an hour from Leeds – the place I’ve lived for the past 10 years – I’d never visited Hebden Bridge before. Which was an error, as this place is super lovely.

With a canal running right through the middle there’s plenty of opportunity to spot brightly-painted narrowboats, feed hungry ducks with scraps of bread and play poosticks over the bridge.

It’s also a great place for shopping, with lots of little independent boutiques, cake-filled cafés and ye old ice creameries. The whole of Yorkshire is mad for the Tour de France (or Le Tour Yorkshire as we’re calling it) and I spotted these cute yellow bikes everywhere.

I kept my outfit really simple and my hair undone, with a bunch of flowers in my hand for good measure. Nice way to spend a sunny Saturday, don’t you think?

A Touch of Tapestry

This is probably as close as I’ll ever get to needle craft. I don’t have the patience (or the eyesight) for sewing, so this Topshop tapestry skirt is my little nod to the WI.

Printed skirts like this (and yesterday’s Primark winner) are my favourite thing to wear right now. I’m really loving a simpler, more streamlined silhouette – easy-to-wear tailored pieces teamed with soft tees and chunky cardigans, my trusty Clarks flats and a slouchy leather bag.

These photos were taken at the bottom of my street, too – this could be the easiest outfit shoot ever!

Tropical Prints

Tropical prints are having a maje fashion moment right now. I’m slightly obsessed and have been snapping them up left, right and centre – my wardrobe now resembles a Carmen Miranda dressing-up box. Which is obviously no bad thing.

This skirt was the result of my first jaunt into Primark in a very long while. There was a time when Primark was my everything and most of my wardrobe came from its hallowed rails… then I swung the other way entirely and developed a dangerous Whistles habit. Now I’m trying to budget once more, and Primark is my quick fix shot of shopping. This skirt was £5.99. Five-ninenty-nine. Every single person who complimented this outfit got the price of the skirt screamed at them – ‘oh you like my skirt well guess what it was FIVE-NINENTY-NINE FROM PRIMARK can you even believe it.’

Really the price just makes this little beauty even sweeter – it’s such an easy style to wear and the print really pops when paired with a simple white shirt. It’s officially my new favourite and you should expect to see it often. Hooray!
