Snow, schmoe.

Pinched from we ♥ it
Sometimes, being grown up is really, really… rubbish.
We had about 5 inches of snow here this morning. I peered around the curtains and rather than that sense of glee you got when you were knee high to a grasshopper, I felt the thunk of dread settling in my stomach. Just before Christmas, I had a snow day and I felt bad about it. The nature of my job means unplanned time off is frowned upon and there’s an immense pressure to work work work, whatever it takes. So today, I decided I should soldier on and make my way in.
Bear in mind, I live roughly 40 miles from my place of work. Thunk.
After a 2 hour commute that involved lots of slipping and sliding, I made it in. To be greeted (or not, as the case may be) by an almost empty office. Sigh.
Come 1pm and amidst a flurry of white, I set off for home. I managed to get a mere 5 minutes from home before I had a run in with the car in front. Literally. Bump.
Luckily there was no damage and no one was hurt, but still. Hardly the snow-filled daydream of a 10 year old girl.
So, snow and I are not speaking. I’ve made no snowmen, I refuse to raise a smile at the snow angels in the car park and I almost throttled the Mr when he playfully threw a snowball in my general area. I’m giving snow the (very) cold shoulder. Harumph.
How are you getting on in the hazardous weather? If you’re currently wearing cut off denim and lazing under a red hot sun, I don’t want to know! 🙂
PS – Here are some things that are really cheering me up today:

Hot chocolate with marshmallows – yum.

My very first Smythson notebook – a birthday present from a very dear and generous friend.

Pitch perfect

Well, it’s the very last day of my Christmas/New Year holiday and I’m really not looking forward to going back to work tomorrow. I’ve had such a great break, I feel like a student with nothing do all over again! I think next week will be tough, but I’m sure I’ll get back into it. Do you have the post-holiday blues too?
Last night my best friends and I went out for a belated birthday celebration. We got all dolled up and hit the town despite the snow and it was SO MUCH FUN! We went to a karaoke bar in Leeds called OK Karaoke. All the private singing booths were free last night so we booked one for 2 hours and sang ourselves hoarse. It was the best night out I’ve had in a long time!
There’s something to be said for a night out that involves an excess of fun, rather than alcohol. I kicked off my shoes and gave it my best moves until the very end. What a great night!
Today has been spent tying up loose ends and getting as much as possible done before work takes over once again. Unfortunately it hasn’t been the best day – as I was driving home the biggest, most terrifying pheasant flew straight into my car and broke my wing mirror. I was so upset because the pheasant must’ve been hurt but I couldn’t stop anywhere. The perils of motoring in the countryside, I guess!

New year, new start, new clothes!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope your NYE celebrations were fun – we stayed in with Amaretto and lemonades and Jools Holland’s Hootenanny. It was great to have a chilled out night to end the year.

2009 has been a year of change for me – I changed my hair, changed my job, changed my car, changed my home and changed my relationship status. It was the year I grabbed with both hands and made things better for me. I’ve never really been into New Year’s Resolutions because I think we should always be striving for a better, healthier, happier life, but I do have a few that relate directly to this blog…
1. Stop buying cheap clothes. I started this when I bought the Steve Madden boots above – they cost £105 (down from £150) but I know they’ll last and last. Documenting my outfits in this blog has made me realise just how much I spend on cheap clothes and how quickly they fall out of favour or fall apart. So now I’ll be buying less, but better.
2. Go vintage. I’ve added a few vintage pieces to my wardrobe in the last few months, and I want to keep doing this. Blogs including Cali Vintage have really opened my eyes to how wonderful vintage clothing can be.
3. Re-learn dressmaking and buy a sewing machine. I studied textiles for a few years and really loved it, but haven’t been near a sewing machine for a long time. I still know the basics but would love to start making clothes from patterns. I might ease myself back in with a cushion cover, though!
4. Continue to build A Little Bird and pinkplectrum. I want to improve my photography (which should be easier as the nights get lighter) and make more pretty jewels.
And my final resolution, which isn’t really a resolution at all, more of a life mantra, is…
5. Smile, laugh, have fun and be happy.
Here’s to a great 2010 – what are your goals for this brand new decade?

Happy Birthday to me!

There’s something very inconvenient about being born the day before New Year’s Eve. It’s freezing outside. Everyone’s saving their pennies for New Year’s Eve. You get presents wrapped in Christmas paper. If you manage to get enough people willing to brave the cold and their bank managers for a night out, it’s always really quiet everywhere. If you’re not clever about it, celebrating your birthday on 30th December can be a real letdown.

However, as I enter my 25th year (I was 24 yesterday) of life, I’ve got it down to a fine art. A house party is ALWAYS the way to go! I’ve been having house parties for my birthday since I was 16. They started as raucous affairs in my Mum’s house that got me into hideous trouble, then developed into cool student gatherings with experimental music and guitar playing. Last year I lived with two girls and we threw the most amazing music-themed fancy dress party which went down a storm.
This year, I decided to play it cool with a family gathering, as most of my friends (and the Mr and myself) have been struck down with colds. We invited both sets of families including siblings and grandmothers and just had a great time, with food, music and lots of wine. It was a roaring success!
The Mr bought me this gorgeous lace dress for my birthday, which I teamed with my new Steve Madden boots (which are THE BEST things I have ever bought!) and my sale bargain Gap cardigan.
Here’s a little sneak peek of my birthday party from last year… can you guess which musical genre I went as?! 🙂

January Sales – my review

Posted in Fashion.

Today I went sale shopping. This is rather significant for me, as I usually avoid the sales at all costs. I like to think of shopping as a sensory experience – it’s about taking time to really look at things, feel the fabrics, imagine them in your wardrobe. When it comes to sale shopping, there’s no chance to do these things. You’ve got to keep your eyes open and your elbows sharp… grab things you like, work out the price, put back the ‘not so sure’ items and pay. You can do all the nice touchy feely bits when you get home.
But, after a year of poor retailing and the threat of a VAT increase come 1st Jan, there are some really great bargains to be had and I thought now was as good a time as any to get involved in the January Sales.
So, here’s my sales tale. First up – ASOS
The ASOS sale started on Dec 24th and is advertised at up to 50% off. After a really good trawl around, I found the biggest savings to be had were on dresses, knitwear and footwear. I filled my basket with everything that caught my eye then, with a total of £249 (ARGH!!), I removed all the things I could do without. In the end, I only bought these…
Steve Madden biker boots, £105 down from £150, ASOS
I spent over £100 so got free next day delivery (next working day, which is tomorrow!), but if you spend over £75 you’ll get free standard delivery, and there’s the Super Saver delivery option, which is always free no matter how much you spend. Returns are free too, so if I change my mind they can go straight back… although I highly doubt I will!
Next up – Topshop
Topshop is somewhere I rarely visit. I adore the clothes but find them hideously overpriced for what they are. I think the fact that the clothing is often hyped as ‘high fashion’ is used as an excuse for high prices. If you’re like me and think the same, the sale is the perfect opportunity to stock up on Topshop goodies. I really recommend this sale for knitwear – they had racks and racks of jumpers, knitted dresses and cardigans. I originally picked up 4 different pieces but really had to restrain myself!

Top, £10 down from £18, Topshop
Cardigan, £18 down from £35, Topshop
Slipper socks, £7 down from £12 and tights, £5 down from £8, Topshop

Then on to Gap
Gap is one of my favourite high street stores – the quality is fab, everything is really well cut and they really do know basics. Of course, you have to pay for all that. The Gap sale was advertised as up to 50% off and was really well stocked, with plenty of sizes. I wanted jeans but their skinny styles never go on sale – shame!

Tee, £6.99 down from £10, Gap
Wool cardigan, £24.99 down from £55, Gap
Finally, H&M
I find H&M shambolic at the best of times, but add a sale and frenzied shoppers into the mix and things just seemed to crumble! I couldn’t face looking at the sale section as it was madness, with clothes everywhere! So I went straight for the denim section as I need new jeans…
Jeans, £14.99, and wool beanie, £3.99, H&M
The jeans are just how I like them – tight with a bit of stretch and very straight in the leg. Since I had my hair cut short, I’ve been finding it really hard to wear hats without looking bald! This mini beanie sits atop my head without covering too much hair, so it’s perfect.
Total spend: £195.96 – I’m pretty impressed with that, I must say! I’ve stocked up for the next few months and it’s all really great quality stuff that will last for much longer than one season. I’ll definitely pay more attention to the sales from now on!
Did you get any really great bargains?
